Like it or not, the focus has shifted towards gay priests. Some commentators may think that people who write about the church’s scandals are just negative people who are quick to spread negative news about the church as if the gay priests were invented by Panorama’s journalists!!
The first point we wish to outline today is that it’s evident that it’s not simply the ‘critical or anti-conformist ones’ who are criticizing the church but church members themselves who are not afraid any more to come in the open and criticize! The example of Australia is not an isolated one! We live in the world and we hear many comments. On the internet we don’t find websites of the so called people who are ‘against the church’ but even from those who love the church and it’s priests’, are calling for change.

Well the fact shows that for many many years, sexual abuses were well hidden from all the people of the world! So what they expect from the world to shut up and let them hide things for more years? The people in the pews hear that they cannot have a sexual relationship outside marriage…and then they get to know that their priest goes to gay clubs and has sexual encounters. What would you expect of such people?

The gay priest problem is about celibacy, church law, and hypocrisy. The paedophile problem is about child abuse, criminal behaviour, and abuses of power.

Sexually active priests are not simply because of today’s world. It was a very old problem.

We are not after blood. We don’t wish to destroy the church but rather point to the big picture. All the news we are hearing are all pointing to one direction: when will the church let the baptised people to speak openly about the church’s sexual teaching? The word of God is not just an old book. But it is the living experience of the believing community. Now the so called ‘good’ Christians want a change too. The gay priest should not be looked as something different from the sexual abuse of children or of adults. This is not because we mixing up different types of abuses and situations. In fact we firmly believe that the gay priest problem is about celibacy, church law, and hypocrisy. The paedophile problem is about child abuse, criminal behaviour, and abuses of power.

Consequently, when one presents a general sexuality which is out of touch with people’s lives and forcing priests to pledge celibacy when they are still young and inexperienced one expects all types of deviant behaviours. Now the priests are finding a way out to let their sexual inhibitions run wild. Let’s see the big picture and discuss sexuality: from the point of view of the priest and the common people.
One of the things which should come to mind is the ordination of married people.
